Linux and my ThinkPad A31

Crunchbang 10. Better than Windows?

Since I’ve been using Linux for a few months now I thought I would write down some of my experiences with using Linux as a OS. The distribution that I am using now is Crunchbang10, this is the latest version of Crunchbang and I think it’s better than the other versions that I have used in the past. It runs faster, has a few more options in some of the apps, and even though I have been told by my computer wizard friend that it is,”The most complex OS of them all!” To me it seems pretty simple to use.

Since I really don’t speak “Techie” I’ll give it my best shot, I like the way the OS let’s you customize the way you use your machine. Also it is damn near a bullet proof when it comes to anti-virus, hacking, and in general bad stuff that can happen to other Operating systems like Windows. There is no need to buy software or download anti-spyware because Linux has all of this built right into the system.

There’s no need to download program software because it’s already there too. I have some programs on my dinosaur of a computer that anywhere else would cost you as much as the price of your laptop. Here’s the thing, some of those software downloads have backdoors, or keyloggers added on that opens up your machine to adware and all kinds of nasty stuff you really don’t want. Didn’t count on that did you?

Given the choice I really like Linux just for these reason alone, but I still haven’t gotten to the meat yet. Linux has programs like GIMP, Evolution, Abiwords ,Geany text editor, terminator, VLC Media player, Transmission bit torrent client, Xfburn, and many more built right in. So why would you want anything else that’s probably going to be outdated in a couple of months down the road unless you pay for the automatic updates. With many different Distributions to choose from, compatibility with most hardware and machines Linux is in my mind the way to go.

Being a relative new comer to personal computing I get mixed up a lot, but with this OS and the way it works it’s pretty easy to figure out what to do next. Menu options are clear and concise, navigation through the system is simple. File management is done with my favorite drag and drop, this makes things quick and smooth no “oh I did that wrong” or “I think I lost a file somewhere” and here is the best part I think, Linux has made my old IBM ThinkPad A31 a really fast and reliable machine once again!

It has helped me to be a better operator, and increased my knowledge about computers by leaps and bounds. Compared to Windows XP, Vista, Windows7, and all the other microsoft OS that came before I really think Linux is way better.

Finally, if you are still considering think about this single fact here, Linux is an Open Source OS that means it’s free for download and that my friend is the best part of the whole package!

Welcome to the Linux community!

I've been using Linux off and on since the first distribution that came out in about 10 floppies. It's come a long, long way since then. Tons of user forums out there when you run into some quirks with the OS...like using an ipod with it!
